I love how he says that he’s working his AYUSS off with Gief when he gets 33% life off in some cases with a single SPD and his entire gameplan is either jumping knee > SPD or perfect parry > SPD or “let my opponent have - frames” > SPD, DI > SPD or his shitty drive rush khambo that he burns himself out for really fast > SPD. He jumps around like a spaz so much you’d expect him to have the airthrow in the chamber when he fights a fellow jumper but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do it once. Reminds me of how he kept crying that he can’t get out of the corner because he doesn’t have any tools as Blanka. Fucking BLANKA! It’d be like bitching about having no anti-air when playing a character with a DP. He doesn’t understand games at all, he just watches some high level khambos, memorizes them and then autopilots.
With DSP’s Gief all roads lead to SPD. Gief combos? Gief reads? Gief anything? Nah. Just walk forward throw or walk forward command grab. That’s the REAL 400 IQ hard to execute impressively skillful play there. I think DSP is a good example why some people shouldn’t be helped or shouldn’t be taught how to do things, if someone were to hand hold DSP and have the patience of a saint to teach him how to play, you just know he’d be even more of a toxic bitch and use his skill to bully others.
Thats not how match ups work. Every match can be won with smart play. Its that whole working so much harder that Phil thinks he understands. Its stuff like her moves land her too close to him. Or that her effective range is well within his range. That all comes together to leaving cammy with only a few effective tools against him. Thankfully this isnt ST where you have 9-1 match ups. But its a fight.
I don’t mean Zangief can’t beat Cammy, I just mean her kit makes it really hard. Her speed lets her dart out of his range and her command grabs make it so she can approach more easily. And even if she is in his substantial range, her speed makes grabbing her difficult as well. Gief needs good neutral game so he can force faster characters to play at his pace, something a good Zangief can do. But as I mentioned above, Dave isn’t a good Zangief, he’s a Cheese Gief. Which means spamming command grabs, throwing out some low kicks to force guard which grab beats and mixing it up from time to time with a leaping down jab. Again though to force a block to get in range for the command grab. For more on this, just was Piece of Peace rip him a new one in his most recent completely one sided beat down on The Guy.
I know I posted this before but Nephew did a geif stream and had no issue with cammy, phil has issue with everyone, even other geifs. He can only beat people who like one of those Ryus he played friday that couldn’t AA let alone DP for thier life.
He’s a gimmick gief, he can’t adapt and he can’t do anything but ths DSP BnB tick throw or light light into special.
Like @Skip said, he relies on gimmicks (Geif, Honda, Sim), lack of match up knowledge (Sim and dropped honda AS SOON AS people learned how to deal with headbutt and butt stomp spam) or broken characters (Blanka which has become more or a menace than Ken, Cammy, JP or Luke)
His Ryu stream showed how he has like…I want to say Jayde levels of fighting games fundementals. Ryu was Good ole honest melbatoast mr fundamentals, his Ryu was absolute trash. I would actually say worse than his chun li…sorry as he say Chung Re.

I still laugh that he just randomly parries and like clock work parries on wake up even after getting thrown for an entire round all because Diaphone said he has to parry more. he just does it cause he was told to do it, he mentally can’t take the advice and apply it to a situation that fits so he just does it.

I watched Snakeyes playing Zangief just to see what he’s actually capable of and it amazes me how Phil is dong nearly the exact opposite. You’re right. He has absolutely no idea of how the character needs to be played, and because of that he will never reach Master. I’ll be shocked if he manages it. He just goes for grabs, can’t anti air, can’t control the flow of the match, can’t close distance. It’s either he spanks, or he gets spanked. No inbetween.

I have a feeling that SF6 is going to get a special day stream because he knows and one time admitted that there’s less competition playing when a majority of people are at work or school just to sneak into master and never play again.

Playing on an off Tuesday the Pool is significantly smaller so hes going to fight the same people most of the time.
It’s a gamble if hes going to get points or not, ironically. Even coming from his own mouth that he has bad days because he keeps running into “top tiers” aka Cammy.
He’s running away from matches, mostly from Cammys. It used to be just Kens but Cammy is the main culprit now. After so many matches with her, you would think he would fuckin’ know what to do by now, but nope.
Dude is even running away from Guiles, Eds and Juris. Even allowing a troll Master JP named Kat’s Fat Gunt to match up with him because he wants points. Him hitting master won’t mean much at all with how many shortcuts he’s taking.
The reason he was one and doneing them is because he got matched again with people who beat him, so it really doesn’t have anything to do with the characters but the players. He even blocked RawPhil’s sock last stream with how often he spanked his gouty ass with Cammy. What’s more is that as Gief he has the advantage against Cammy, like I said it’s not as lopsided as the insane matchups were in SF2 and its revisions but so many of Cammy’s moves leave her open for a robust, quick’n’easy 33% life punish counter SPD. In any case, the LTGfication of DSP is nearly complete.
I was recently watching Broski’s videos. He had a “week of Gief” or a month or something like that where he tried playing Zangief and gave his thoughts on the character. I think this ties into what you said about DSP complaining how “Capcom ruined this character” when in fact the problem is with him for not knowing how to play. Broski talked about how in the past games Zangief had an unfun design where you would just have to guess on wake up if he will command grab or do a hit and he actually calls it casino gameplay. Despite DSP screaming out loud that he wants ‘intelligent skill based gameplay’ once you ask him what that consists of it’s this rng guessing game that he actually thinks is healthier. He’s stuck in the 90s’ thinking he’s hot shit for doing 360 or 720 inputs.
This is why DSP is actually a blight upon gaming as a hobby and industry and deserves the hate and ESPECIALLY deserves to be rejected and shut down by the community at every turn. It’s not just that he has these trash anti consumer, anti fun and anti fairplay takes on gaming it’s that he’s always putting out these videos being all confident and insulting people who actually do good work and then you have some marketing or accessibility devs like in GoW who see this idiot and dumb down their game so they can keep idiots like Phil strung along throughout the campaign. Blame Phil for why we have tutorials for basic video game shit like jumping, double jumping, wall jumps, keeping an eye on health bars, pressing a button to interact with a glowing obvious story item and my absolute favorite courtesy of DMC5: introducing a mechanic where you hold a button to shift the camera in the direction you need to go to progress and then having the mongoloid fuck up anyway because he wasn’t paying attention to what he was reading and started tapping the button instead of holding it.
The problem though is buffed or not, Cheese Gief is still easily taken down if the opponent has even the faintest idea of spacing.
Jesus. Dave relies on those grabs way too much. Tonight’s PoP stomp showed how Dave is always just trying to grab as soon as he gets up. So much so, PoP just jumps and Dave looks like a moron.
Yeah, Dave’s a Cheese Gief, it looses by default to anyone that knows what basic spacing is. Cammy is just REALLY good at it because she’s not just fast, she has great movement tech. Same goes for Juri and Kimberly because of their dashes, and Kimberly also has her teleport. Of course JP is great at creating distance and keeping you sat there and the Blanca would also be good against Gief because of Blanca ball being self spacing and can’t be grabbed since Blanca is in the air.
so I think he knows how bad he is but he’s trying to keep up a persona or he’s on autopilot protecting his ego.
If he doesn’t know if Gief is getting buffs or if cammy is getting nerfs why is he in such a rush to get geif to master before the patch? Anyone who mained such a “bad” character and a patch was coming they would wait till the patch dropped so they didn’t have to “work so hard” to play a videogame.
Or since he has problems with getting out of the corner and throw loops why not wait till the drive reversal change?

Well we have an example of him playing as a top tier, that being Luke. And Dave got deflowered the entire night. Blanca is top tier too, he’s ranked right there with Cammy and Guille and his Blanca is totally bitch made. He gets his flabby ass handed to be regularly and is trapped right at 1500 MP. Aki was a total wash. Phil went from rage to apathy which is the first time I’ve unironically laughed at Phil speaking and he rage quite the character.
The fact he skips the combo heavy characters shows a lot about him. Dude even skipped Ed and didn’t bother with like 1/3rd of the cast.
He isn’t learning. The most he cares about when watching pros he can barely name, are their combos. We really caring about fuckin’ combos as Gief is funny and he’s droppin that shit all the time. No tech is being learned, and his fundamentals are deteriorating playing gimmick bullshit.
Phil be forever stuck as a gatekeeper to high level play. Dude is hard stuck at entry level Masters. Does not care about learning how other characters work because he would rather sit there dumbfounded on why something is safe and why is he getting hit after pressing a button when his opponent used a +frame move.
It’s because Dave has his flow chart. Grab away at least 1/3rd their health bar, single basic combo that looks kinda cool and does a fair amount of damage, what combos into level 3, can level 1 or 2 be a reversal and what charge move can be easily spammed that is preferably self correcting for post move spacing. Honda and Blanca were these to a T, Lilly look forcing a square peg into a round hole and Zangief was the biggest exercise in cowardess since he ducked Respect the Pact and claimed her had diareha. He got to master by running away from everyone that was kicking his ass.
Basically, the Phil playbook to a T. Take a successful formula, throw that out the window, and go “Yeah, Snake eyez is highly talented when it comes to Zangief, he is considered one of the best Zangief players…however, he’s an idiot, I’m the genius!” Does it completely ass backwards “What??? Snake eyez told me to use that, dood! It didn’t work. What a moron!”
